The Mission of NCOM

The National Coalition of Motorcyclists is a bringing together of existing motorcycle groups for the purpose of mutual exchange of information, legislative strategy and the combined strength to fight all that is adverse to the freedom of the road.

NCOM has grown to over 2,000 member organizations representing hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists nationwide.

The goal and purpose of NCOM is to assist all motorcycle organizations and individual riders with legal, legislative and other motorcycling issues. The Coalition will not dictate to any organization, but will be available to assist NCOM member groups through such FREE services as legislative assistance, nationwide information network, public awareness programs, safety projects, loan program, biker anti-discrimination legal and legislative assistance, etc.

Where were you on 9-11?

Most of us can remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we first heard about the attack on New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC. In 2001.  At the time we were running a halfway house in Texas for ex-convicts. That day and for days afterwards, we were glued to the television to find out what happened. For us personally, I have a brother who worked maintenance for the towers that were destroyed.  It was a full 24 hours until we found him as telecommunications were out and he had to walk over the Brooklyn Bridge to start his travel home to Long Island.  He lost many of his co-workers in that disaster. There were weeks of sharing hope on the internet as many either blamed God for the tragedy or were struggling to keep their sanity.

On the one month anniversary of the attack, we arrived with a team of 7 bikers to Greenwich Village where we based out of Abounding Grace Church to do relief work. The biker pastor welcomed us with open arms. He was one of the first with the ability to arrive to the scene of the destroyed towers because his Harley was able to maneuver through the debris. We spent a week visiting Fire Departments, carrying supplies to the weary and just standing on street corners around the perimeter of the devastated area, comforting, praying and offering whatever relief we could supply.

Getting Started…

We kicked things off with Christian Unity meetings at two of the NCOM Regional meetings. First was Region V in Memphis, TN on November 11th and then in Region II in Tulsa, OK on November 15th.

At these meetings, the Christian Unity Council presented the mission statement for the MRT and sample training in areas such as proper protocol for hospital visits and basic first responder training. We are currently lining up more workshops for the May 2012 NCOM Convention in Indianapolis whereby attendees can receive training such as being certified for First Aid and CPR.

Those who are certified in an area will be eligible for “rockers” that will go with the Christian Unity patch that will show to the community that this person is a credible representative of their local COC as a part of NCOM Christian Unity Motorcycle Resource Teams.

National Coalition of Motorcyclists Christian Unity Meeting May 2011

During the Christian Unity meeting at the May 2011 NCOM convention in Albuquerque, NM, a strategy was shared which empowers ministries, clean and sober clubs and other groups to offer skills and services within their COC region. The purpose of this strategy is for motorcycle organizations to work together to serve the biker community with chaplaincy visits, emergency services, and meeting a myriad of needs within the biker community. It was presented “up the ladder” and approved for the Christian Unity Council to begin promoting and helping COC’s to establish this across the nation.

We at NCOM Christian Unity feel it is providential , that on  the ten year anniversary of  our  nation’s September 11 tragedy, the Christian Unity Council met in Oklahoma to hammer out the vision for our next steps as a movement within NCOM.

We decided  upon a name -  Motorcycle Resource Teams (MRT’s).  We decided to concentrate on Regions II and V to begin the program so that we could troubleshoot and nurture the MRT. This was decided because there were enough council members in those regions and also groups of bikers that were beginning to fashion this type of relief ministry within their COC’s.

We are excited at what is happening and this comes at a time in history where there is such great need not just with bikers but within the communities we all live in. Because of the myriad of crises that we see on a more continuous basis, we believe that this is a next step for Christian Unity and its associated groups within NCOM. We want to show that bikers have a heart, that we are equipped and prepared to meet the needs of whatever comes about in a world that is continuously bombarded with chaos. We are becoming organized and can muster up the help needed at a moment’s notice.  This will also put bikers in a positive light as we shine and use the skills we have to serve.

"The purpose of the NCOM Christian Unity Motorcycle Resource Team is to provide a unified response to the needs of the biker community within their COC area and NCOM region with effective and credible service."

Please notice the last phrase,
           “effective and credible service.”

This is key to what is expected from Christian Unity.

To achieve this
we are approaching this from two angles.

1. To provide training to make us better at what we do through valid instruction.

2. To provide means for certification in areas to acknowledge those who are credible in their roles.

Devotional

The Weight of Another's Burden

Sometimes we forget the weight that God allows to be put on us when we are earnestly interceding for others. I remember slipping into the back of the sanctuary when my pastor was at the front of the church by himself praying. I remember at times, just hearing him groaning as though he was in pain. I have heard this same sound from other pastors who thought they were alone praying. Later, becoming a pastor myself,
I came to understand this feeling. Being at a place in the Spirit to where you genuinely carry the burdens of others to the altars and no words will suffice for the way you feel. It is especially pressing when the one you are praying for needs a miracle that only God can work.

At times, in ministry, we stand as Aaron did between the dead and the living to intercede on their behalf. It is times like this that we find ourselves emotionally right in the middle of what is going on in the lives of those that we care about. The ones who have requested our prayers do not realize how real that burden will become to us. They do not realize that we will shed their tears for them and anguish with the trials that they are experiencing. It is though their burdens are ours. Our own life experiences and the things we have went through with others contribute to how we feel I am sure, but the only explanation for how intense it becomes must be that we feel the compassion felt by a living God within ourselves. This is necessary not just for the pastors who pray, but for all of us who enter into intercession for others.

I have to admit, that there are times when I do not want to enter into intercession because I know the weightiness of such an endeavor. However, the fact that another is in needs drives me to enter in. As much as I would like to never experience such heaviness again, I know that I am blessed to have the privilege to go into the throne room again. We want those throne room experiences to just be one of beholding His glory, but the fact is, intercession is the reason the priest enter into the throne room. If we really want to behold His glory, we must serve His people.
